Abstract
The Design of Innovative Machines Lab (or DIMLab) is the research space directed by Andrew Murray and David Myszka at the University of Dayton in Ohio of the U.S. Classically, the DIMLab has focused on challenges in machine design with work ranging from mechanical presses to morphing aircraft wings. Included in this range of projects are several that have had significant biomechanical or biological content. This talk will focus on this bio-aspects of the DIMLab’s work including the following:
- Performance tricycle redesign for FES-stimulated riders;
- Combining orthotics with FES for improved grasping and limiting fatigue;
- Rapid and accurate estimation and tracking of the center of mass in humans;
- An attempt at designing a mechanical equivalent to a human foot; and
- Contributions to morphometry -the quantification of changes in shape used to explore a variety of objects as they grow or evolve or vary within species.
